11.15am-12.15pm

Dance Workshop 1 in Balmoral 1.

Fan Dancing with DeeDee DeLa Rouge 11.15am -12.15pm

Ever wanted to give the graceful art of fan dance a go? Well, now you can! Former performer and Bluestocking compere DeeDee will lead you through all there is to know about fan dancing, from the correct way (for you) to hold the fans, wrist action and basic moves and hide and reveal principles, plus posing techniques.

DeeDee is an experienced performer and teacher whose 'La Plume Noir' signature act with black feather fans was always a hit with audiences. We guarantee her fan workshop will be a lot of fun!

Participants will need to bring a pair of hand fans (small, folding fans - nothing elaborate!) and will be required to wear suitable attire for movement (non-restrictive outfits - leggings, t-shirts, dresses, etc and shoes with a low heel).

Craft Workshop 1 in Balmoral 2.

Burlesque Tassel Making Workshop

with Lilly Laudanum 11.15am -12.15pm

Make your very own pair of burlesque tassels/pasties with performer Lilly Laudanum!

Who can forget the moment when Barbara Windsor brought a pair of red heart-shaped pasties to the small screen in Carry On Doctor in the 70s? Pasties have come a long way these days, and not only is tassel-twirling an art form in itself, but often the decoration of the performer’s pasties form the ‘punch line’ to the act.

Participants of this craft-based workshop will learn how to make the all-essential burlesque cover-up which has become an iconic accessory.  Participants will be given basic materials and equipment (sequins, fabric, etc) although some may wish to bring any old trims etc they have lying around to transform into something fabulous. You don’t need to be any good at sewing as participants will be shown techniques are for non-sewers, too.

The workshop will be led by Ronnie Kerswell-O’Hara, costume maker for high profile attractions including The Dungeons brand (London, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, York and the newly opened Blackpool Tower Dungeon), Warwick Castle, Italy’s Gardaland and various theatre practitioners and burlesque artists and performers, including those of her own performing persona, Lilly Laudanum.

Taught by Kitty Kane.  Internationally renowned starlet Kitty Kane embodies everything that is quintessentially British about the up and coming UK Burlesque scene. She embodies both charm and grace through her classical expression of the most elegantly executed dance numbers, but also incorporates the best of British humour by incorporating circus skills into her quirky comedy acts. She performed at the British Grand Prix sending pulses racing and was also seen on a 40ft screen as the back drop for The Manic Street Preachers acclaimed international tour Send Away the Tigers, performing the very best of classic British burlesque.  Recently returning from a tour in Canada and America she is returning to her Welsh roots at the WBF.

Dress code: Wear Clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in (if you feel daring dress up but not essential).  Gloves will be required for this workshop, can be provided or you can bring your own.

Figure Drawing With A Difference At The Welsh Burlesque Festival

Does still life leave you as limp as the fruit in the bowl? Does life drawing lack vivacity? Well, if figure drawing leaves you flat, prepare for a bit of va-va-voom with our Pin Up, Pose And Pencil workshop for creative minds!

Burlesque, like art, relies on self expression and freedom to make pictures on stage and here our models, clothed in their spectacular costumes, will be short-interval posing for you to explore their lines, contours and character as your observational skills translate what you see onto paper. We will also be encouraging expression, mood and individuality by playing with different lighting angles.

You do not need to be the next Da Vinci, Michelangelo or even Freud to come along and have a go as the workshop is not a tutorial, with the emphasis more on opening up art to everyone in a non-formal environment where you will be free to unleash that creative inner demon!

We will supply the paper and pencils or charcoal – you just bring yourself and a sense of creative adventure, plus any other medium you fancy drawing in (eg pastilles, pen – and budding photographers you are welcome to! Sorry, we can’t accommodate paints due to the clear-up required!) if pencils are not for you… Unlike life drawing, our models will not be nude but will they will be theatrically and interestingly attired for this occasion of self expression, freedom and fun!

The festival was created in response to the resurgence of burlesque, both in its classical, comical and contemporary forms and to platform burlesque as a recognised modern art form that encompasses a range of disciplines including dance, drama and theatrical expression.

The festival is geared towards (but not limited by) growing interest and increasing numbers of Welsh audiences and the influx of new burlesque talent.  We aim to foster a supportive community of performers, both old and new, within the UK burlesque scene, and to enable networking opportunities among performers and promoters.

Welsh Burlesque Festival aims to promote the art and entertainment that is burlesque, inspire audiences and to encourage the exciting and diverse range of acts and performers by bringing a first class event to the Welsh capital.

All performers from across the Globe are invited to perform in the live shows which will take the form of The Evening Gala show and a Tea Time Tease Show: (Up and coming acts fresh from the UK scene that we think you should know about in a "tea time tassel off" where you decide which act you want to see again in the evening show.)
